The State of the Reroofing Industry

The NRCA released the results of their Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing.

In August, the most recent Quarterly Market Index Survey for Reroofing was released by a coalition of trade associations including the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers AssociationCanadian Roofing Contractors AssociationChemical Fabrics & Film Association Inc.EPDM Roofing AssociationInternational Institute of Building Enclosure ConsultantsMetal Construction AssociationNRCANational Women in RoofingPolyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers AssociationRoof Coatings Manufacturers Association and Single Ply Roofing Industry.

The survey had more than 300 respondents in the U.S. and Canada, with the majority (67%) identifying as roofing contractors, while 33% reported they are roof consultants. Forty-six percent of respondents said that they provide low-slope and steep-slope roofing services, while 42% said they work exclusively on low-slope roof systems.

The survey indicated that the majority of reroofing professionals (54%) saw an increase in customer inquiries in Q2 2021 from Q2 2020. Twenty-nine percent reported no change in activity and the remaining 17% reported a decrease in customer inquiries.

Similar trends were seen in project contracts this quarter compared with Q2 2020, with contracts increasing for 54% of respondents, holding steady for 28% of respondents, and declining for only 17% of respondents.

When comparing the first and second quarters of 2021, customer inquiries increased for 53% of respondents, remained the same for 31 percent of respondents, and decreased for 16% of respondents. When looking at project contracts the numbers were 53% increased, 33% unchanged, and 15% decreased.

The survey also looked at project backlogs, finding that as of July 2021, 16% of roofing contractors reported no project backlogs, 38% reported project backlogs of one to two months, 20% reported project backlogs of three to four months, and 26% reported backlogs of five months or more.
