Labor, product and pricing are the top three challenges for roofing contractors, according to a recent Principia survey.

Responding contractors singled out issues in finding skilled labor, training workers and improving efficiency, the performance, sustainability and variety of products and price increases, per the survey. 

More specifically in regards to performance, adhesion and sealing challenges were mentioned multiple times by roofing contractors, according to the survey.

Sustainability is another hot button issue. 

In the survey, many contractors mentioned the need for more energy-efficient products (e.g., solar, green, cool roofing) while others suggested higher recycled content to reduce post-consumer roofing in landfills, according to Principia.

Price increases were viewed by contractors as likely to have homeowners shop around for additional roofing quotes, according to Principia.

Further challenges cited by contractors include availability, weather, customer issues, safety, and competition, Principia noted. 

According to Principia, manufacturers and industry associations are working to support roofing contractors to help alleviate the labor challenges impacting their businesses through several initiatives, including training and certification, skilled worker recruitment, tools to improve efficiency and easier product installation.
