Selecting the Correct Repair Material

The final selection of the material specified in the contract documents is an important discussion point in the pre-construction meeting before a concrete repair project starts. It's important that this meeting follows the Concrete Surface Repair Technician's pre-placement inspection. The discussion then can focus on the manufacturer's Material Data Sheets as the team considers product options.

ICRI's recent publication of the Cementitious Repair Material Data Sheet has made the selection task more straightforward. Technical committees from ICRI and ACI developed the document in response to the repair industry's concern about premature failure or poor service life from selecting improper prepackaged materials for the job conditions. While the ICRI document does not address every issue associated with material selection, it provides a practical approach that meshes with ACI 546.3R.

Developing a standardized approach to the pre-construction meeting when selecting repair materials enables contractors and engineers to compare alternative repair products objectively.
