Build Out Alliance Lifts Up LGBTQ+ Professionals in ConstructionBuild Out Alliance Lifts Up LGBTQ+ Professionals in Construction
Build Out Alliance has become a place for anyone in the building design and construction industry who either identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community or as an ally. Here's how to get involved.

The construction industry has not collected a reputation for being on the cutting edge of progressive change, but one organization, called Build Out Alliance, is hoping to change that.
Kristen Pecci, a co-chair of Build Out Alliance's outreach committee, said the organization was born out of a realization that there was a lack of representation in the industry from the LGBTQ+ community.
A place for anyone
Pecci said the Build Out Alliance has become a place for anyone in the building design and construction industry who either identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community or as an ally.
"We focus on visibility, advocacy, mentorship, and leadership within the LGBTQ+ community within our industries," said Pecci, who added that the group holds professional and social events.
Pecci, also on the organization's board of directors, said the group's mission is to advocate and promote the LGBTQ+ community within the construction industry.
"A big piece of our mission is to promote and value the inclusion of LGBTQ+ professionals who work with pride in our industry," she said, adding that the organization is very interested in ensuring everyone has access to equal opportunities.
Emphasizing leadership
Pecci, an engineer with over 15 years of experience in the industry, said "construction can be a little exclusive historically," but she said society has seen a shift in the conversation.
"We take mentorship of folks within the industry very seriously," said Pecci.
Pecci said Build Out Alliance is dedicated to emphasizing LGBTQ+ leadership within the construction industry and focuses heavily on career building.
Build Out Alliance is based in New York City, but the group has new chapters created in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
According to the organization's website, the group "promotes and advocates for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) community within the building design and construction industry."
Build Out Alliance tries to "lead by example in our own work environments and through partnerships with community organizations," the group's website stated.
Pecci said participation in Build Out Alliance is available for all professionals involved in the building design and construction industry.
Events hosted by Build Out Alliance include networking events such as happy hours and walking tours as well as professional programming, including panel discussions, lectures and workshops. On June 26, the group will also participate in the 53rd New York City Pride March.
Along with supporting its members, Build Out Alliance also raises money for other charitable organizations.
